Chapter Four

“Maisey Loukas? I’m Felicia Scout. I’m your Youth Officer. You have quite a team, here. I understand this is your attorney?” Kind eyes, pleasant smile. Maybe she could be trusted. Maybe.

“Graham Hawk.” The attorney extended his hand and sat in the seat next to Maisey. Emily sat on the other side and Ali and Thad sat on a sofa near the end of the table.

“Most youth I come across here are lucky to have the support of one family member, not to mention a whole brood.”

“We sent two to the movies,” Maisey said.

“Wow. We would have needed more seats. So, in your voicemails you said you had new information that would be helpful for me, but can you tell me in your own words what happened from the beginning? I’ve read the reports, but they can be so stuffy. Just a bunch of detail without any emotion. I’d love to see things from your perspective.”

Hmm. Was it a trick or genuine concern? Maisey recounted the events from the time Mrs. Beck came into the store to the night they took her in and booked her.

“Wow. It really is like it sounds in the report.” She shook her head. “This is the weirdest case I’ve ever had to deal with. I’ve had shoplifting, drugs, inappropriate texting, and even a botched school bombing, but never anything remotely close to this.”

“Runs in the family,” Thad said and elbowed Ali.

“Hey, stuff happens around me. What can I say?”

“I feel like charging you with tampering with evidence is a bit much. They already had the rest of the bones. So, what new information do you have that might help me decide what we need to do, here?”

The lawyer slid some papers across the table, though not with as much dramatic flair as Maisey had hoped.

“We were able to ascertain the origin of the bones in question,” Graham said.

“On your own? And how did you go about doing that? They haven’t even made it through an inspection at the lab beyond confirming that they are human. They’ve been backed up for weeks.”

Maisey started to speak, but Mr. Hawk held his hand up. “We will not be divulging that information, but I believe the findings in this email will be sufficient for you to drop the charges against Miss Loukas.”

The officer read the email in silence, raising an eyebrow or nodding occasionally. “I can see where you might think that, Mr. Hawk. There is still the issue of Miss Loukas hiding the bones in her bag and attempting to remove them from the crime scene.”

“I’d hardly consider it a crime scene, based on those emails,” Ali interjected.

“Let’s go through this together,” Felicia said. “From these emails, we can say that these were bones from an anatomical model in the nursing lab at the college. We can assume then, that there was no murder. If Maisey had been charged with murder, I would definitely advocate for dropping the charges. But, Miss Loukas is charged with tampering with evidence.
